Let’s chat over coffee about the power of the tongue…
What’s that mean? Well let’s dig further into some dictionaries and concordances. Tongue is defined as:
- a language, a nation distinguishes by their speech.
- the muscular tissue that aids in taste, chewing & swallowing
- used for flowing speech; figuratively speaking, inspired by God, like the evidence of tongues in the book of Acts.
The tongue aka the mouth is what I am referring to, essentially what comes out of your mouth verbally. What you are saying out loud.
For years this has been something I’ve struggled with. It’s hard not to get offended by everything others say or do and lash out with your own words…it’s hard to be peaceful when things around you are in chaos…It’s hard not to get caught in the trap of gossiping with friends about what that person is doing, saying, or wearing. Before you know it, you’ve said to much.
Sounds shallow, well it is…why do we do that? Why do we say things that are hurtful, demeaning, mocking, criticizing, or rude? Why do we put other people down for trying to do good things from a pure heart? Why are we so judgmental? We are broken, which is why we need a Savior. I’ve been blessed to know Jesus since 1996. How about you?
Seems so long ago, but over the years God has changed my heart towards all people..He has given me a “Mother’s Heart”. Not just for Godly people, but all people. My heart sometimes wants to lash out when I’m hurt or offended, but then God’s Holy Spirit reminds me of who that person is and who I am. Often bringing me back to reality..my mouth must be tamed, like a wild animal, it must be trained.
Regardless, it’s not been easy, and sometimes I say lots of bad words, and critique others! It’s a constant battle I fight, but I am learning to train my tongue. Today I needed to write this out whether as a reminder for myself or for someone else reading it. Whether you believe or don’t believe, the following scriptures are eye opening and heart wrenching for me.
My prayer is that your ears will be open to hear what the Bible says about the POWER of the TONGUE and that you bless and not curse others!
A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; From the produce of his lips he shall be filled. Inner satisfaction comes from true & good speech.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. The words people say wield great power.
For we all stumble in many things, If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect (mature) man, able also to bridle the whole body. (Perfect here means-Mature) And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body. But no man can tame the tongue. It is unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.
Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. David wrote this prayer for safekeeping from wickedness. It is a prayer for wisdom, for restraining evil language, and for knowing the correct words to speak. David wanted to avoid any act of impiety(lack of respect); he did not want to offend God with anything he said.
Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.
Proverbs 12:18 There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health.
My son/daughter, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, and health to all flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
Where is your heart?
What is your purpose?
Are you honest in speech?
Have you gossiped and not realized it?
Let’s all ask ourselves these questions..because Death and Life are in the Power of the Tongue… we can bless or curse…what are you gonna do?
Walking in Love,
